Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice is merging with U.K.-based law firm Bond Dickinson.

The new firm will be called Womble Bond Dickinson, though both firms will operate as separate partnerships with separate management, according to a press release. Bloomberg Big Law Business, the Winston Salem-Journal and the News & Observer have stories.

The merger, set to take effect in October, gives Womble Carlyle its first international office.

The combined firm will have more than 1,000 lawyers in eight U.K. offices and 15 U.S. offices. Combined revenues of more than $410 million will put the merged firm among the top 80 U.S. law firms and the top 20 U.K. firms.

The two firms had formed a strategic alliance last year. The merger will not result in layoffs, Womble Carlyle spokesman Bruce Buchannan told the News & Observer.
